A Mermaid’s Tale: How to Host a Swimming Party of the Seven Streams
by Dakota Driskill of Party Peaches ATL
Gather close, landfolk! This be a whisper from the water, a song from the deep where river meets sea. Once each summer, when the fireflies wake and the pool shimmers just so, our mermaid returns to Atlanta from the mighty Mississippi River, where she was born beneath the cypress trees in waters thick with secrets.
She doesn’t come alone - she brings tales, treasures, and games from her travels through the Seven Streams. And with just a bit o’ planning (and not much gold), you too can summon the magic for your little ones.
Weave the Waters: Mermaid Decor That Tells a Tale
Forget the plastic and party-store puffery, merfolk decorate with what the river gifts them!
Tidewalk of Tales: Roll out butcher paper like a long dock, and paint a river path with handprints as fish, stamped seaweed, and spiral swirls. Let the children add to the story with chalk and footprints as they arrive.
Mooncatcher Jellyfish: Turn old mixing bowls upside down, hang ‘em from a clothesline with blue ribbon tendrils, and let the breeze do the rest. Add a glow stick inside if the sun’s heading down.
Mermaid Nesting Corner: Gather pillows, nets, and a washbasin full of cool water and floating glass “pearls” for kids to fish from, this be the mermaid’s home away from home.
Note from the Deep: Keep yer decorating light, but make the space feel like a page in a storybook, not a catalog. Less is more.

Treasures of Craft: Simple Mermaid Makes from Riverfolk Hands
Let the wee ones craft as merfolk do, with glimmers, salt, and imagination.
Potion Bottles of the Lost Current: Offer vials, glittering bits, colored water, and tiny shell pieces to mix and swirl. Tell the tale: “These potions call sea creatures, tame tides, or make dreams float.”
River Pearl Compacts: Small dollar-store mirrors, sea glass, and stick-on jewels turn into “clam mirrors” where young mermaids can catch a glimmer of their power.
Fish Scale Fans: Fold shimmering cardstock into fans and glue on overlapping spoon scales or bubble wrap prints to mimic the tail of a river guardian.
Optional Touch: Invite the children to name their potions aloud in ancient mermaid tongue (or silly gibberish, it’s the same really).

Sea Fare for Shorefolk: Snacks with a Splash o’ Imagination
Ye needn’t roast a kraken to feed a party. Here’s what real merfolk nibble on:
Moonfoam Floats: Blue punch with a scoop of lemon sherbet, served with a pearl straw. Add edible glitter if ye dare.
Treasure Cups: Layer crushed graham cracker “sand,” pudding “mud,” and buried jelly bean gems. Serve in clear cups with tiny shovels.
Sunken Sandwich Ships: Triangles o’ sandwich with sails stuck on with toothpicks. Cut sails from old maps or scribbled parchment.
Tentacle Tangles: Spiral pasta with pesto or butter—a favorite of sea serpents and picky eaters alike.
And don’t forget the mermaid’s favorite snack: pearl popcorn (white chocolate-drizzled kettle corn with edible shimmer dust)!
IV. Games Passed Down from the Coral Queens
No screens, no scoreboards—just story-play and sea-silly joy.
1. Bottled Messages from the River Queen
Scatter scrolls in bottles or clear eggs around the yard. Each holds a dare, riddle, or blessing from the Mermaid of the Mississippi. Kids must whisper their answers into a conch shell (or plastic cup) and toss it into the “tide” (aka a kiddie pool).
2. Seaweed Sneak
Stretch a green ribbon low between chairs or pool noodles and challenge the young ones to sneak beneath it like stealthy eels. If they brush the seaweed, they must freeze and sing a fishy tune to unstick their fins.
3. Tail Toss Tournament
Toss beanbags into giant cardboard tails painted with glitter and waves. With each bullseye, the kids “unlock” a new tale from the Mermaid herself.

The Mermaid Herself: Born of the Mississippi
Unlike ocean-born sirens, our mermaid swims upriver, from the mighty Mississippi to your neighborhood pool. Her stories aren’t polished like pearls, they’re earthy, funny, wise, and full of Southern sparkle.
She tells tales of tugboats that talk, catfish that sing gospel, and the time she hid in a Mardi Gras float to escape pirates. Her visit isn’t just performance, it’s a chapter your child gets to live inside. With singing, swimming, and story-weaving, she brings the party to life.
One Last Shell of Advice…
Don’t aim for Pinterest perfection. Mermaids love mess, mystery, and make-believe. Focus on creating an experience, a feeling, a day your child will remember like a dream. Whether you use glitter or gum wrappers, they’ll remember the laughter, the story, and the magic you let happen.
And if you need a mermaid to help steer the ship—Party Peaches will send one upriver.
